How to serve avocado for baby-led weaning
Soft, mild, and zero cooking needed. Avocado is a lovely first food for little hands. Here's exactly how to cut it at every stage, plus a few easy ideas for the whole family.
6 to 8 months: thick spears
- Serve ripe avocado in thick spears, about the width of two adult fingers, so baby can grip it in a fist.
- Too slippery? Roll the spear in finely ground hemp hearts or crushed baby oat cereal for extra grip, or leave a little skin on the bottom as a handle.
- Prefer a spoon? Mash it and preload a baby spoon for baby to bring to their mouth.
9 to 12 months: small soft cubes
- As the pincer grasp develops, offer small, soft cubes or thin slices.
- Spread it thinly on toast strips, or stir it into eggs or pasta.
Ripe check
A ready avocado yields easily to gentle pressure. Firm avocado is harder for babies to manage, so give it another day on the counter.
